(EN) How to translate “file” into Portuguese

The word “file” has different meanings in English, thus, it must be translated differently into Portuguese.

  • Apresentar (uma reclamação, por exemplo): to initiate a legal or administrative process.
  • Arquivo/ dossier/ pasta: a set of documents that are stored in an organised manner; the cabinet/ box/ place where such documents are stored.
  • Arquivar: when a legal case is concluded.
  • Ficheiro: a set of documents, images, etc. stored in a computer.
  • Lima: a tool that smooths wood, nails or other materials.
  • Processo: a set of documents that builds a legal case or an official process.
